I have Your Favourite Polar Animals! Did you guess which animal might be the favourite one?
No one voted for the caribou but we think that is a very useful animal especially for keeeping warm. Thanks for joining in and sending your favourites. We read that making graphs is more fun than biscuits, maybe it is! I am doing a pie graph now! Polar Animal Results

The Polar Expedition

Last Friday we pretended we were going to the Poles! We got our tickets and packed our bags. We took a first aid kit and a Garmin, hot chocolate, lights, matches, maps, an icepick to break up the ice and a compass and lots of other things. Then we measured how big a penguin is in the Antarctica. An emperor penguin is 4 feet tall! Then we measured a polar bear in the Arctic. It was 8 feet long! Longer than Daddy who is 6 feet tall. We made a life-size polar bear and penguin out of newspaper.

The next thing we did was an experiment with BLUBBER! We put a bag on our fingers and mummy coated it in butter! Then we put another bag on top. We left our other fingers bare. Then we put both fingers in a bowl of ice. The finger without the blubber got too cold! Polar animals have lots of blubber to keep them warm. We had to find good materials for insulating and test them with ice cubes in warm water. Sawdust works well. Then we had a polar animal quiz. I got 11/12. Pretty good!

 We made arctic scenes. I included the NORTHERN LIGHTS and a polar bear catching a seal in an ice hole. Later on we also made igloos out of styrofoam and a dogsled with Daddy out of wood (that was on Saturday). 

We pretended to harpoon  fish with the broomstick and pretended we were Inuit hunters. Mama Lucy helped us gut the fish. We saw his heart and all his intestines.

Laura came for supper, so we were cooking an Arctic meal. We made some bannock (Inuit bread) It was really nice (but we cooked it on a burner with gas not whale blubber). When Laura arrived we had a snowball fight with cruched up newspaper. We made snow that Mama sent from Canada! And we also played "Finger Pull" (an eskimo game). It was a great day.

HOW TO MAKE BANNOCK: Mix together 3 1/2 cups flour, 1tsp salt, 1 tsp baking soda in a big bowl. Add in 1 1/4 cups yogurt or buttermilk or milk and mix to a dough. Put on the table and knead for 5 minutes (taking turns makes it easier!) Make into rolls. Heat oil in a frying pan and add the rolls, cover and reduce heat. After 3 minutes turn rolls over and cook another 3 minutes until golden brown.

HOW TO PLAY FINGERPULL: two people face each other with right toes touching. They hook middle fingers of right hands and try to pull each other off balance.

The Car That Would Not Start

 Once upon a time, there   was   a  man  called   Tim. One   day     his  land  cruiser  did  not  start. He pushed and pushed and pushed but it would not start. He went and got Rachel.

“Come  and push  this   big   white  land  cruiser”  said  Tim. 

They pushed and pushed and pushed but it would not start. Rachel   went   and   got  Louisa.

“Come  and push  this   big   white  land  cruiser”  said  Rachel. 

Tim  and  Rachel  and  Louisa pushed and pushed and pushed but it would not start. Louisa went and got Amisadai.

“Come  and push  this   big   white  land  cruiser”  said Louisa. 

Tim  and  Rachel  and  Louisa  and  Amisadai  pushed   and  pushed  and  pushed but it would not start. Amisadai went and got Lulu.

“Come  and push  this   big   white  land  cruiser”  said Amisadai.

Tim  and  Rachel  and  Louisa  and   Amisadai  and Lulu pushed   and  pushed . It started!  “Hooray!   Where  shall   we  go?” said  Louisa.

(This story is very true, except for the bit about Lulu the Pig pushing)


On Monday, Daddy got really stuck. It took a long time to get him out.

Expeditions! How do you poo in the Arctic?

We have been to Matema beach. We went swimming LOADS of times in Lake Malawi. In the afternoons,the waves were so big. I was playing with Louisa, and a HUGE wave came and we were underwater! We also had lots of water fights. Daddy and I tried and tried to get Andy. Daddy got him and  Andy kept hiding behind his dear wife Angela, making excuses that if we got her we would be in hot water! But I squeezed a balloon over him and got him wet!

Birthday at Matema

We had an expedition to a volcanic crater lake and looked for German treasure. And we had an expedition high up in the mountains and looked for gold. And an expedition to see a natural bridge made out of lava.

Can you see us?

Tonight is my birthday party because I was at Matema for my Birthday.The Galvins will come and Marta, Laura, Andy and Angela. There will be a bonfire and light-up balloons and we will roast marshmellows and hot dogs, potatos and dough boys. We will paint baloons, the ones other people did looked really funny! We have made birthday gingerbread house from Taylor and Matthew in Canada instead of a cake.

We have started learning about the poles, the Arctic and the Antarctica. Do any of you know how to poo in the Arctic? I need to plan an expedition and I need to think about these things! What do you think I might need to take with me? Here is an Arctic joke ... what vegetable was forbidden on ships of arctic explorers? (Leeks!) Did you know that when polar bears try to catch seals, they put their paws over their noses so they can't be seen?

And we hope you have too! We had so much fun playing with Elia and Finley at Christmas! They are friends from England who now live in Tanzania and they came to stay with us. We had lots of fun with Andy and Angela too, and have just come back from a holiday with them. We will tell you about that soon. But here are some photos of our Christmas.
